Out of the mouths of babes...

Colton has been on a ROLL lately. Let's recap some of the "out of the mouths of babes" moments from my boy this past couple of weeks...
  • This past Wednesday was Ash Wednesday. Colton was so interested in the ashes. Who all gets them. Why are some bigger, smaller, darker, brighter, x's vs. crosses, etc. He was very  good when it came time to "get ashed", because he stood in line by himself and walked right up there. Once back to our pew, he was observing my everyone's ashes. Then he kept turning around, and watching people behind us. Finally, in a faint whisper, (but with a giant, obvious pointing motion) he points a few rows back. "Mom, mom...see that guy back there...not that one, but the guy on the end" (still pointing...as I'm trying to lower his hand, remind him to turn around/rude to point) he said, "Mom. you can hardly see his ashes, because he's brown!"  Thank GOD he was only whispering. However, props to observant Colton. Ashes aren't as bright on black/mexican folks as they are on white folks. Observant little shit....
  •  A few weeks ago, Colton came bursting into the house, grabbed my attention and started, "Mom. There was an old lady who lived in a shoe. She had..." and when I jumped in to say it with him, I got scolded. So he started over and completed "had so many children she didn't know what to do!" We talked about where he learned that, and he said Maverick's Grandma taught them driving them home from preschool one day. Cute. We moved on. About a week later, on the way to his 5 year check up, he started questioning me. "Where does Marsha live?" "Why does Emmalyn always call Nina, Dee?" "Who goes with Jack?" -- it was pretty cute. I answered each question and then said, "Colton, do you realize, Grandpa Kent's mom, my Grandma, had NINE kids. That's crazy isn't it?"  He quickly, without missing a beat said, "No. She was the old lady who lived in a shoe". Adorable. And Grandma would have loved that story. And agreed. :) HA She was the lady who had so many kids, she didn't know what to do! :)
  • Today is President's day and although I had to work, the kids at Frontier had today  off.. When Pam said to Colton that the "big kids" (school aged kids) would be there today, because they didn't have school I said, "oh ya, President's day" and I asked Colton if he even knew who/what a president was. He said, "Oh yah. Abra Lincolnham!" :) Yup. Abra Lincolnham!

Sometimes, this kid is too smart for his own good, but he's quickly wearing off on his sister...
As heard out of Emmalyn recently:
"Um, I was asking Bub" -- when we asked her to repeat her question.
"Me no love these, memaw" -- telling Grandma she didn't like tomatoes.
"Wha da eck" -- she said this one so quickly we had to re-verify, but yes, she was saying, "what the heck?" HA Too funny!
"Ahhh....he ed urts" -- she's learned why they call it brain freeze!
"Dis mine." -- Everything belongs to someone...and if its hers, and you touch it, you'll hear about it.
And finally -- a short video we tried to send Daddy while he was on his trip to Michigan...

Kids say the darndest things...

Get Well Soon, Grandpa Kent

Here's the best way to share Dad's video. Thank you all so much for submitting the clips. This really made him smile (and say some funny things the first time we watched soon after anesthesia). I think it will be treasured company this evening in the hospital. Thank you for your prayers, your thoughts, for answering the phone calls and lifting Dad up. We appreciate all your love and support.  58E2238E-D2E3-4B38-9FF6-AE1E502ABD14.mp4

Covid ... the end. (Hopefully. Maybe. I really don't know....)

Almost two years ago, exactly, our world drastically changed. Everyone holed up at home, scared to enter the world and catch Covid 19/Corona Virus. (Except Jason, once he got to feeling better from most likely having Covid before it was a known thing, he just went to work everyday like nothing had changed). The world basically shut down  -- special hours, curbside pick up encouraged, no dining room service only drive through or carryout. If someone coughed or sneezed anywhere near you, you were instantly suspicious. Our parents lived on complete edge and worry, taking in every ounce of information the news was constantly throwing in their faces. It was a time of great uncertainty, lots of information being thrown at us from trusted news sources, social media, and hearsay from those in the medical profession.  We spent March to May just trying to figure out our new life. No baseball. No softball. Lots of time with our animals. Lots of crafts. School from home. Porch drop ...

Central Indiana Winter Spectacular

We kicked off show season with this set of calves in mid-January at the Central Indiana Winter Spectacular, a first time show down in Cloverdale, Indiana. I'm not sure what was more fun - being with our kids and friends at a cattle show, or listening to our kids meddle over the thought of staying in a Motel 6.  (Backstory on this one -- when I worked at Purdue/in the Conference division, I held a few conference at The Hyatt in downtown Indianapolis. When I had events there, I'd earn points. We then would use those points for free night stays....I think I had maybe 15 or so over the years. So, the only hotel my kids know, is a Hyatt, because unbeknownst to them, it was FREE.....which is the ONLY reason we stayed in such a nice place with young kids. So, imagine their dismay when the Motel 6 in Cloverdale didn't have an Eagles Nest rotating up top, or an indoor pool and hot tub/workout area. We have officially raised hotel snobs.....because when we finally took them to the k...
