Huntington Open Show

So, we're cattle people now. For how long...we'll see, but for now...we're cattle people. And we're kind of enjoying it. There's a LOT to learn and a lot of work involved, but our kids...they thrive in it, and perhaps that is what makes 4-H and all those $$$ worth it.

Colton's been doing a great job working with his calves, Candy & Rizzo. We've all fallen in love. At least with Rizzo...Candy's coming around. But he had yet to show them...in a ring...with other cows....at a show. So, we went along with Bell's and Hall's to the Huntington Open Show.

First off, we have to say THANK YOU to them for taking us under their wings, and welcoming us to their party. We had a great weekend. Secondly, Hayden and Carson were so good to Colton and Emmalyn alike. Great kids, great mentors.

We went up Friday evening, and had a few rookie mistakes....you know, like leaving our registration papers to show as a purebred at home, and lining the bottom of the trailer with shavings that would literally just blow out on US-24 the whole way to Huntington. Meh, minor. We got there, weighed both calves and checked them in, took a practice walk around the arena, fed them, then fed us. Los Amigos was AMAZING. The peach margarita...EVEN BETTER.

No, you've not seen Keaton -- we were cautious and left him with Gram & Gramps for the night, since we had no idea what we were getting into. He joined us on Saturday when they came over, but I don't think he minded staying with them...

Saturday morning we jumped up early, grabbed a few snacks and groceries for the day, then got to the trailers to unload, feed, and then wash. Oh, by the way, it was probably MAX of 35 degrees, and misty gross out. FUN TIMES. Laura Bell warned that she'd never been to this show when it wasn't crap out...so we at least kind of knew in advance. We worked the calves, cleaned them up, and Colton showed Candy first. Even Emmalyn got in on helping out!

She did great -- I held my breath through the entire class -- nervous that she'd get away, or something might go awry. He did great. She did great. He stood in his placing order, and when the judge bounced back on the mic to give reasons, that loud boom startled Candy and Colton's cold hands just didn't have a tight enough grip. Away she went. But, Colton you remained calm, the judge and ring assistants help you get her back, and you were confidence Rizzo would do better. Dad and I assured you that you'd gotten all the bad out of the way -- last place and the cow that go away -- it can only go up from here! And it did -- though you stood last again (all three of you did, so don't feel bad, we didn't go to compete) you did wonderful with Rizzo and he was so well behaved for you.

Colton, we are so proud of you. You tried something new, you handled it with confidence, and patience, and we know this project is teaching you about so much more than Cows. We had a great day together as a family, and we can't wait to watch you show again!

Get Well Soon, Grandpa Kent

Here's the best way to share Dad's video. Thank you all so much for submitting the clips. This really made him smile (and say some funny things the first time we watched soon after anesthesia). I think it will be treasured company this evening in the hospital. Thank you for your prayers, your thoughts, for answering the phone calls and lifting Dad up. We appreciate all your love and support.  58E2238E-D2E3-4B38-9FF6-AE1E502ABD14.mp4

Covid ... the end. (Hopefully. Maybe. I really don't know....)

Almost two years ago, exactly, our world drastically changed. Everyone holed up at home, scared to enter the world and catch Covid 19/Corona Virus. (Except Jason, once he got to feeling better from most likely having Covid before it was a known thing, he just went to work everyday like nothing had changed). The world basically shut down  -- special hours, curbside pick up encouraged, no dining room service only drive through or carryout. If someone coughed or sneezed anywhere near you, you were instantly suspicious. Our parents lived on complete edge and worry, taking in every ounce of information the news was constantly throwing in their faces. It was a time of great uncertainty, lots of information being thrown at us from trusted news sources, social media, and hearsay from those in the medical profession.  We spent March to May just trying to figure out our new life. No baseball. No softball. Lots of time with our animals. Lots of crafts. School from home. Porch drop ...

April - Hey Batter, Batter...

April is always the month that makes us think spring is FINALLY here, because it's starting to warm up, suns starting to shine more, except when we finally get to the baseball/softball fields, it's just as cold as it was in February. Thankfully, Emmalyn had an indoor sport to carry us through the cold of the month, until baseball/softball really got kicked off! Emmalyn tried something new this year and participated in CiVic vollebyall. This is a club program out of Carroll County, and she practiced every Sunday from January through April. Finally in late April she had three play dates. One Saturday we played up at Fairmount, IN. Grandma Jacki, Keaton and I went with Emmalyn, while Dad, Grandpa and Colton cut down some trees in preparation for our spring projects. Emmalyn and Mae Ella did a wonderful job for their team, both rocked their serving and seemed to know the game and keep their cool better than some on the team. The second weekend Dad, Em & Mom traveled to Triton H...
